Saffron to Sassafras,

A wonderful cookbook published by the Sharing Shores Indian Women's Association in Baton Rouge, La., is the national first place winner of the 17th annual Tabasco Community Cookbook Awards, announced Paul McIlhenny, president and CEO of McIlhenny Company. This handsome, one-of-a-kind book is an expression of the passion that this community has to leave a legacy of their heritage and encourage people to return to the kitchen and embrace the joys of homemade Indian cuisine. Saffron to Sassafras dishes up a variety of traditional and contemporary Indian recipes, from the simple potato appetizer known as Aloo Tikki, to the traditional Tandoori Chicken, to the Louisiana-inspired Rajmah - red kidney beans slow-cooked in a combination of spices that are familiar to those both in Calcutta and Cajun country. With easy vegetarian recipes, flavorful meat dishes, unique desserts, and a chapter devoted to the fusion of southwest Louisiana and Indian cuisines, Saffron to Sassafras brings together two culinary legacies, and recognizes their similarities and celebrates their differences. Peppered with richly-colored photographs, warm anecdotes and helpful preparation hints and techniques.

The sales of Saffron to Sassafras help to improve the lives and welfare of underprivileged women and children in the Baton Rouge community.  Proceeds from the sale of this cookbook help the Capital Area Family Violence Intervention Center/Battered Women’s Program.
